Stardew Valley

Introduction

I never fail to get lost for an insane amount of time in Stardew Valley. I go into my day thinking, “I will clean up my neglected farm for an hour,” and end up realizing it is nighttime, and I haven’t decided whether I’ve decided whether I want to plant 2 more rows of grapes or start mining new content, yet. Such relaxed pace comes with its benefits.

There is almost nothing constant nudging you, “you should do this!”

The game gives the opportunity for player to decide which one would matter most, settling into your own pattern naturally.

What Stardew Valley is

Stardew Valley is a farming and life simulation game made by Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone. In this pixel-art world, you get to manage your own farm, farm crops, hunt for fish, craft useful items, do combat and fighting, form friendships with the valley’s residents, take part in community festivities and much more.
Upon arriving to Stardew Valley, you inherit an old farm that has clearly not been used for some time, but the mission in life and on the farm is for you to be gradually renovating it. The farm is a mess and it isn’t efficient to do much farm-work around your farm, but that is actually good. As you slowly remove trees and rock and plant more and better looking crops, the farm will start to feel like it has been truly taken care of, it looks beautiful. Your townsfolk matter as much as farm animals and crops do because they follow their own scheduled lives, which makes the Valley seem inhabited and much more alive than a simple collection of pixels you will find yourself collecting from or doing business with on a weekly or even daily basis.

How the Game Works

Your daily life is structured around time and energy management. A typical day begins on your farm with all your watering duties, farm-life chores like feeding your livestock and harvesting crops. On other days, perhaps you will venture to another one of Stardew Valley’s vast zones, which allow you to go fishing, scavenge for useful things in a local forest and interact with many NPCs, go to shops and purchase new things. Activities on these days can be combined with the daily farm routine in order to make sure that absolutely nothing is missed.
The game also gives more adventurish activities such as mining for precious resources, combating enemies encountered along the path. Resources that you uncover while mining give benefits into many other aspects of the game, which allows you to expand the capabilities of the farm or develop a new range of technologies. Relationships with individual people are crucial in this game since certain unique story events, secrets and dialogues can be unmasked after you have invested an adequate amount of time in forming bonds with the NPCs that inhabit Stardew Valley. Relationships are what make Stardew Valley the complete and overall better game than a common farming simulator.

Benefits of playing Stardew Valley

The primary positive aspect is how uninhibited the gameplay is. While it is certainly possible to become the most profitable farmer possible, the game does not enforce this and will not penalize you if you choose to have a laid back time. Perhaps your afternoon is best spent decorating your entire house with new items, or maybe your priority today is to entirely ignore the farm for 12 hours and dedicate all of your time into going for the most fish possible.

What if some afternoon you have decided to travel into town or forge some valuable items at your farm?

Your farm and your lifestyle in Stardew Valley are yours alone to control. The game slowly develops alongside your farm; while earning money and mining valuable resources, you’ll slowly gain improvements, which eventually lead to building additional infrastructure for your farm, creating automated facilities and even further development in technology or equipment for new facilities! This alone should push you towards new discoveries as there’s nothing like making an enormous automated system to fulfill your harvesting quotas! Stardew Valley also motivates very long-term plans, that don’t necessitate making a hard choice any decision as there will always be more time, other options, or even greater upgrades than you imagined possible.

Relationships with a majority of the townsfolk have much more purpose since while trying to attain valuable information or quests from the local residents, your visits to their dwellings will serve more of a reason than just a trivial shop encounter.

Final thoughts

Stardew Valley doesn’t need new explosive scenarios to keep you in it. It’s simple accumulation of countless decisions that make the game so compelling.

You plant a plant. Then harvest it. Then sell the grown crops at the market, eventually buying a more effective upgrade tool, and suddenly your whole plan has completely shifted.

The simple grind slowly becomes… well… addicting!

This grind is by far my most loved part of it: “There is simply no single best definition of success.”
